Esteriör on upcoming trends in the world of interior design

We had a chat with Zandra Lidén and Henrik Ekberg, founders of hyped design studio and interior design shop Esteriör. We talked about what corona has done to our interior design shopping habits and what’s in the pipeline for the next year.

How has the pandemic affected consumer behavior when it comes to interior design?

As more time is spent at home, the home has been given a whole new focus. Giving your home a little bit more love and attention as well as finalizing those small projects that have been postponed forever are clear covid trends. Not being able to travel in the same way as usual probably also means that the home is valued higher right now.

Do you see any trend that is a direct effect of the coronavirus?

A direct, initial effect of the pandemic was that we noticed that people, perhaps especially in the neighborhood around our shop, understood the value of consuming locally. The pandemic has made us understand that buying behaviors affect our cityscape and if we want a vibrant city with shops and cafes, we must act accordingly and shop locally. This is a trend we hope sticks around in the future!

What do you predict for interior design in 2021?

We at Esteriör are constantly fighting for more color, shape and personality and we feel that this is coming more and more. 2020 has been a year of shift: from grayscale to more daring color choices - and we think this is just the beginning. Let the interior become more personal, different, daring and unpretentious in 2021!

Recycling, vintage and second hand are just as good as important, especially now that our view of the environment and consumption is starting to change significantly. Awareness is a matter of course in 2021 and we don’t believe at all in the same wear-and-tear mentality that we have had before. Shopping will get smarter and smarter.

From an aesthetic point of view we see that the 1970s vibe continues; even though the 80s begin to enter the stage. Wood in different types and shapes is coming more and more.

If we play with the idea that we can start traveling again in 2021, where should we go for inspiration?

Take the train to the continent! Paris is a favorite city that we constantly long for. If you take the train via Copenhagen and Berlin, you get the full dose of inspiration, culture, color, shape and train coziness you need.

What interior design trends should we leave behind in 2020?

White, gray and beige minimalism as well as newly made furnishings of poor quality. Personality and quality will always last in the long run!
